My name is Amanda Kirton and I survived a hemorrhagic stroke. "What is a hemorrhagic stroke?", you ask. My brain was filling up with blood. I was fortunate to be in Georgetown's Hospital when it happened. I came to the hospital complaining of stomach pain but it turns out I had a stroke instead. Georgetown Hospital immediately transferred me to St. Davids Main. I had all the bells and whistles. Too bad I didn't wake up for it. I will never forget July 26, 2017. The beginning of my new life.

One Year Later!
It has been one year today since I had my stroke. What a
year too! Everything has changed, and not only myself. Walter has changed, my
parents have changed, and my brothers have changed. The biggest change, other
than me, is Walter. He says he is not a caregiver, but he is wrong.

Shout Out to DPS
I have to give a shout out to Texas Department of Public
Safety, they treat disabled people with respect and give them tickets that
put you first.

Disability or Bust!
I had no income and I needed some, so I decided to apply for
disability income from the Social Security Administration. I heard a lot of bad
stories about how applications weren’t approved the first time around and that
people almost always had to appeal denials. Armed with my discharge papers from
all three hospitals, I was ready for a fight.

Wake up Walter!
It was hard getting use to sleeping in my own bed. Our
bedroom is now downstairs off the back porch.

Rehab Without Walls
I decided, with my family, to get Rehab Without Walls
instead of the usual outpatient therapy after I was discharged from Texas
NueroRehab Center. Of course I couldn’t start immediately, something about
dying twice in January. So I started in February and got 5 intense months of
therapy.

I Died Twice!
January 6, 2018 was just like any other day, I got up, peed,
& cleaned my teeth. After I cleaned my teeth I thought I would just go to
sleep. Walter found me in the bathroom, unconscious, slumped over my wheelchair,
within 10 minutes. He immediately called 911 & I was rushed to the
hospital. Again bells & whistles but I wasn’t awake.
Texas NeuroRehab Center
I spent 3 ½ months in Texas NeuroRehab Center, from
September 11, 2017 to December 22, 2017. I was one of the longest stays they
had. I was the veteran patient!

5 Weeks in ICU
I
spent 6 weeks at St. Davids, 5 of them were in the Intensive Care Unit. I don't
remember much about the ICU, my family said I was a pain (I know, hard to
believe).
